Monte Cofano Reserve
Please note that at the moment the Reserve is partially closed to the public, due to a danger of falling rocks. It is therefore not possible to make the circumnavigation of the mountain.
The Natural Reserve of Monte Cofano is close to Custonaci and San Vito Lo Capo.
It is one of the most beautiful natural corners of Sicily. If you love nature and sea, you cannot miss it.
In this Reserve there are 2 old tower, that of San Giovanni, on the side of Custonaci, and that of Tono on the side that looks to San Vito Lo Capo. This towers were part of the existing system of fortifications of the Sicilian coast created to defense the land by Turkish pirates.
For those who love hiking or the mountain bike there is an easy path that allows the circumnavigation of the coast. The braver tourists can climb the top of the mountain and admire a breathtaking view. A truly unique experience. If the trip takes place in the middle of summer we strongly recommend to avoid the hottest hours of the day and bring with you some water.
The reserve houses several species of birds and with a little luck you can see the Peregrine Falcons, kestrels and buzzards.
Several caves are open along the coast of Custonaci. The most interesting caves are in the location of Scurati. These caves show evidences of prehistoric settlements of great value as fossils, weapons, tools of flint, graffiti, all dating back to the upper Paleolithic.
In particular, inside the Cave Scurati, there was an old rural village, where every year in Dicember you can see a beautiful Christmas Nativity.
